I had the opportunity to read this during school last semester, and it still wows me with the strange, yet simplistic way the author describes things. I kind of knew that Rudy was going to die, but a huge part of me refused to acknowledge that. I wanted Liesel to have a happy ever after with the boy with hair the color of lemons. That's why it felt almost like a hollow victory when Max survived and came back, because she was only able to keep one of the few people she cared about. Don't get me wrong, Max is an amazing character, but I wish Liesel had been able to kiss Rudy before he died.
