"To calm myself, I close my eyes, and his face is the first thing I see; it is not static and frozen, trapped inside a perpetual moment as it is on the film. My mind has preserved him differently. Oh! –How alive he was, and how alive he is now before my eyes! But with him comes everything, everyone, every word and emotion and agony from before.

Before.

It’s an interesting word—it’s childhood, it’s innocence, it’s everything that you took for granted that you now wish so fiercely to have once more. To a child, ‘before’ is history, it’s over and done, it’s a thing to leave behind for something new. But as time goes by, it becomes everything. You find yourself looking over your shoulder, reaching out for a fleeting moment, a smile, a bygone embrace that is slipping further and further away each day. It’s all so fragile, filled to bursting with beautiful things and horrible things and it is more than likely that you will see your fair share of both. But looking back, it started with him.
