Petal Burke, from my old story being moved into tTTS as the deceased first love and former best friend of Simon. She was his "ill child pen pal" partner when they were nine, and when they were transferred to the same hospital, the became very close. She had a congenial heart defect, and since both of their illnesses were essentially incurable, they spent time in the same hospital wing and eventually got to be in neighbouring beds for their childhood. Petal's condition improved over time while Simon's only deteriorated, though she stands alone in that she was the only one of his friends and acquaintances (minus his grandmother, of course) who never left him behind. Her mother already worked as a nurse in the hospital, so she had even more reason to spend a lot of time there. She was Simon's first kiss and on the night before she went to America (Alabama) to visit her uncle and her father's side of the family, they were each other's "first time". She was very spirited, stubborn, intelligent and a lover of classic New Orleans jazz musicians like Dinah Washington, Billie Holiday and Dizzy Gillespie, and was strongly about equal rights: she planned on participating in the march on washington after her stay in Birmingham. However, while walking home with her uncle and cousin one night, she was killed in a driveby shooting--later labeled a hate crime, though it was never solved. This event fueled Simon's violent hatred towards racism as well as intensified his fear of abandonment, and he writes her a letter at least once a month and stores it away in a small trunk. He also drinks a cup of coffee every day, even though he doesn't like the taste of it, because it was her favourite drink.
